Want to Get Pregnant on Your Honeymoon?
If you and your new husband are eager to begin baby making right away, perhaps there’s no better time than your honeymoon. If you’re going traditional and departing immediately after the wedding, there are a few steps you can take to increase your odds of conception while abroad for the first time as Mr. and Mrs.
Timing & Tracking
The one thing you can’t rush, or change, is your body’s own natural timing. Whether you’ve always been super regular or are having some trouble pinpointing your ovulation time frame, there are tons of resources out there to help you track your cycle. Consult your doctor to determine which ovulation tracking aid—from apps to sticks and kits—is right for you. Once you’re able to identify and predict your fertile window, you’ll know if a honeymoon baby is even possible. Don’t fret—if you won't be ovulating while celebrating your honeymoon, it just means you’ll have to extend it a bit longer, even when you get home! It’s a win-win, really.
Extend Your Trip
If you’re doing a mini-moon or are heading out of town for only a few days, you may limit your chances of conceiving. If you want to increase your chances of conceiving while on your honeymoon, the longer the trip, the better your chances. This is also a perfect excuse to plan a longer vacation than usual. Not that you need one—you just got married!
Manage Stress
Stress can take a toll on your cycle, and we all know how stressful wedding planning can be. Lack of sleep, excess worry, and poor nutrition can all put a damper on your fertility or throw your cycle off track, so do your best to take care of yourself and get some R&R before, during, and after the wedding to best increase your chances of honeymoon conception.
Begin Prenatal Vitamins
Most ob/gyns will recommend you begin taking prenatal supplements, specifically those with folic acid. Taking these every day will ensure you have the vitamins and minerals you need for a healthy pregnancy and can reduce the risk for certain birth conditions and defects. Many women report differences in their hair, nails, and skin, too! (As always, check with your doctor before beginning any new regimen.)
Enjoy the Process
We know you’ve probably heard it before, but try to enjoy the process as much as the result. Throughout wedding planning, it’s so easy to just wish the stress and work was over and your wedding day would just magically appear, but eventually you look back and might wish you enjoyed the planning process a bit more. The same can be said for the journey toward pregnancy. While timing, tracking, testing, and even sex can feel like a lot on your plate, try to find ways to make it special. If you notice it’s becoming too much to plan for the wedding and postwedding conception, discuss it with your partner. You might want to consider taking time to tackle each rite of passage separately for the sake of your sanity.
